Protecting your investments

What to do if you receive a security error when using the Quilter app.

Ensuring your investments are kept safe

Much like banking apps, the Quilter app uses the latest security software to ensure your investments are kept safe. If you encounter any of the security related error codes while using our app, we suggest reaching out to your mobile phone provider initially, as we are unable to provide technical assistance in this regard. However, if you have any concerns, please know we are here to assist you.

To keep your Quilter investments safe, our mobile app may stop running if any of these errors occur. This is one of many controls we have in place to ensure your investments held on our platform are kept secure.

Error codes and descriptions

Our independent security experts have provided the following descriptions on what these error codes relate to.

If the error code you’re seeing isn’t listed below, please make sure you’re on the latest version of the Quilter app. You can do this by going to the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Rooting/Jailbreaking is the process of gaining "root access" to a mobile device and removing the restrictions put in place by your mobile’s operating system (the software that supports its basic functions). A rooted/jailbroken device allows the device user additional privileges to access resources otherwise inaccessible to users of non-rooted/jailbroken devices. This may include access to privileged files and folders within the device file system, rights to run privileged commands, or other privileged permissions. This is typically viewed as a security risk, as many malware and hacking tools require rooted/jailbroken devices to function.

A man-in-the-middle attack occurs where a malicious attacker can hijack traffic, steal credentials, and deliver malware to your device. Malware is an application that is intentionally designed to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorised access to an operating system or other applications.

Your phone has been compromised and the file system changed.

System tampering is a process of removing security limitations that are in place by the device manufacturer, and it indicates that the device is fully compromised and can no longer be trusted.

Rogue access points exploit a device vulnerability to connect to a previously known Wi-Fi network by masking preferred and known networks.

The Quilter app will not work on a device without a security PIN, passcode or biometrics. Please enable a security PIN, passcode or biometrics and reinstall or restart the app.

Security-enhanced Linux/SELinux is a security feature in the operating system that helps maintain the operating system's integrity. If SELinux has been disabled, the operating system's integrity may be compromised and should be investigated immediately.

You are connected to a portal network, which routes traffic through a single proxy (portal), potentially opening the traffic to monitoring.

Tampering involves the modification of a mobile app (either the compiled app or the running process), or the mobile app's environment, thereby affecting the app behaviour.

We have detected that the existing app libraries may have been modified, or a foreign library may have been injected into the app.

This can expose your phone to anyone and allow them access to:

  • Install applications onto your phone.
  • Copy files to and from your device.
  • Interact directly with your device to perform tasks you have not initiated.

Quilter does not permit the application to be run on an Emulator. Please install and run the Quilter App on a mobile phone only.

Your phone has been compromised via network-based effects, a malicious app, malicious profile or network.

Similar to 35 above, a man-in-the-middle attack occurred where a malicious attacker can hijack traffic, steal credentials, and deliver malware to the device.

Cellular interception is detected over your cellular network. The traffic flowing between your device and internet services has been tampered with.

The Quilter app security has been rigorously tested in the same way we test all our systems, as well as externally validated. We’ve built in the following security features to give you peace of mind, whenever you access your accounts:

  • Phone biometrics
  • Automatic log out
  • End-to-end encryption
