Blue Monday is a myth

Monday 16 January is this year’s official ‘Blue Monday’ – the so-called Most Depressing Day of the Year. Quilter’s Head of Wellbeing, Daisy Dupree-Loxton, gives an alternative view on how to approach the day.

  • Everyone’s overindulged over Christmas
  • Everyone’s broke
  • Everyone’s busy at work
  • Everyone’s tired
  • Everyone’s stressed
  • Everyone’s sick of the depressing weather

And now we are also trying to get through ‘Blue Monday’ - the Most Depressing Day of the Year, as glossy breakfast TV hosts seem keen to remind us. Travel companies encourage us to reach for the credit card to book that escape to the sun as we see another infographic of inflation numbers and energy bill costs to prove that there is no hope.

So we say to each other:

  • Take some vitamins
  • Go for a walk
  • Mediate
  • Talk to a friend
  • It’s okay not to feel okay you know
  • My cousin / window cleaner / physiotherapist / school friend had depression and they started doing yoga three times a week and now they are fine. Maybe you should try that?

And we think: if only it were that simple…if only I had the time…

But there is some good news, I promise. Blue Monday is made up! It’s an idea produced by marketing executives to get you to spend money in the hope of finding happiness. Because retail therapy is what fuels our economy. So we might ask ourselves: am I the only one finding today so tough? The answer is – no, you aren’t.

Gemma Styles in her essay for the book ‘It’s not ok to feel blue and other lies’ says, “While I think it’s very important that discussions around mental health issues become normalized, suffering shouldn’t be norm…and you should know that … what you are facing is not normal, but you are not the only one.”

So this Blue Monday, made up as it is, let’s all remember that we all face difficult times, struggles that are unique to us and unifying as a society, and that we all deserve the space to sit in those feelings. And while what helps someone to manage their mental health and wellbeing might not be the right thing for you, it is important to look after yourself and find your ways of thriving.

It might be as simple as a cuppa, a chat and an early night.
