Quilter works hard to promote inclusion and diversity at work and within the financial services industry, reflecting a rich and diverse society, for the benefit of our employees, customers and stakeholders.
To mark National Inclusion week (23 – 27 September 2019) we’re sharing highlights from this year so far, to show how we’re ensuring Quilter is an inclusive place to work.
Supporting armed forces veterans and reservists
Quilter has a dedicated initiative which helps veterans in their career transition, as well as supporting colleagues who are military reservists and their families. ‘New Start’ promotes awareness of the value veterans can add to our organisation, to help increase the number of ex-military people we recruit. The Quilter Financial Adviser School also supports ex-military personnel in joining the financial advice profession.
Earlier this year, our commitment to the UK’s armed forces was officially recognised with a Bronze Award by the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. The Scheme recognises employers who demonstrate support to armed forces communities past and present, and whose values align to those set out in the Armed Forces Covenant.
Supporting the LGBTQ+ community
Quilter’s Chief Operating Officer, Karin Cook, pledged her support as an LGBT+ ally and was named as one of 50 Executives taking part in the #50for50 campaign launched by our partner, LGBT Great. The campaign marked 50 years since the Stonewall movement began in New York. Watch this inspiring #50For50 campaign video from @LGBTGreat, which celebrates role models and advocates for LGBT+ inclusion.
Colleagues marched together at Pride events to represent strength and unity, standing for inclusivity and visibility. We thank everyone who supported the cause.
Quilter Cheviot – work experience week
Quilter Cheviot runs a week long Work Experience programme during August. The programme provides an interactive and educational experience to a number of students aged between 16-21. This year, we hosted 44 students across six of our offices. Activities during the week included:
- Building business knowledge & skills, including personal presentation, CV and interview skills
- Networking lunches
- Introduction to Investment Management
- Visit to the Bank of England
- Group task provided by the Research team
A number of the students have already been back in touch about a career with us.
The quotes below show some of the feedback we’ve received from attendees:
“Non-stop week filled to the brim with all the information you might need”
“An experience that I will never forget”
“I found it extremely useful as it allowed me to gain insight into an industry I would have otherwise found difficult to access”
“Giving me an insight into Quilter Cheviot while meeting amazing people and enhancing my sociable skills and confidence”
On 8 July 2019, Quilter co-hosted an event with our external partners, Career Returners. 25 professionals attended the event, all of whom were looking for a route back into the workplace after taking an extended break. The aim of the event was to help the career returners gain a better understanding of what it’s like to work at Quilter and to meet some of our leaders and hiring managers face-to-face to discuss potential career opportunities.
A number of attendees from the event are reaching final stage interviews for a variety of roles across our business. We hope to continue to support more career returners to rejoin the workforce in the future.
Re-thinking the recruitment process
The Quilter recruitment team is starting to use a free tool called “eploy” which checks our adverts to ensure that they are fit for purpose in regards to unconscious gender bias and recruitment best practice. We are also continuing to look at ways to make our brand more powerful in the market whilst embracing inclusion and flexible working.
Gender Equality Network
Quilter has set up a Gender Equality network which allows colleagues to meet and discuss how we reinforce our commitment to equality at work, share their experiences and give them the chance to shape Quilter’s inclusion practices and policies for the future.
