Gifts that give back

Graphic of people exchanging gifts

December is often seen as the gifting season. But alongside the usual socks and chocolate gold coins, it might be worth planning a slightly bigger, longer-term present for your loved ones this year.

Inheritance tax (IHT) is notoriously complicated and can hit people with a big bill if it isn’t managed properly. It isn’t reserved for the very wealthy either. Dealing with IHT is a reality that many more families face after a loved one has passed - in what is usually an extremely vulnerable moment.

This is where using your gifting allowances can make a real impact on those around you. It’s a great way to share your wealth with the people you love while limiting their exposure to IHT. It does take a little bit of extra planning though.

Sitting down with an adviser like me can help you figure out where you want your money to go, and when. For instance, it might be more helpful to gift a family member a contribution towards their first home now, rather than leaving them a legacy.

Whatever you decide is best, we’ll find the most tax efficient way to do it.

I help people plan, protect and invest so they can make the most of what they have, safeguard their families and move confidently towards a secure and comfortable future. Over many years in financial services, I have seen that most people do not need complexity, they need clarity. They want to understand where they stand, what they are working towards and how to make decisions that genuinely support the life they want to live. I began my career on the London Stock Exchange, working as a dealer and market maker. Those early years taught me how markets behave, how quickly circumstances can change and how important it is to stay grounded in the fundamentals. I also remember Quilter as a much smaller stockbroking firm, long before it became the diversified financial services organisation it is today.

That long view has shaped my approach to advice: while the industry moves and evolves, the principles of good planning remain constant. One of the most common challenges people face is the language of finance. It can feel overwhelming, and it is easy to switch off when everything sounds technical. My approach is simple: explain things in a way that makes sense to the individual. Some people want a clear overview, others like detail, and some prefer visual explanation or analogy. The goal is always understanding, because people make the best decisions when they truly grasp their options. Another growing concern for many is tax. People feel taxed at every turn: income, purchases, property, savings and investments. Protecting yourself from paying more than your fair share has become increasingly important, yet the rules around it are often unclear. Good planning helps ensure you are making the most of allowances, opportunities and structures that can reduce unnecessary tax and keep more of your own money working for you.

Life is busy, and finances often end up as a patchwork of policies, accounts and half-formed plans. Many people work hard for decades without ever stopping to think about what they are actually working towards. Some continue working longer than necessary because they never had the visibility to see that their goals were already within reach. Protection, whether for income, health or family, is often pushed to the side until life reminds us why it matters. My role is to bring order, protection and direction to all of this. I work with individuals, families and business owners on pensions, investments and protection, helping them understand their choices and feel confident about the steps ahead. Protection sits at the heart of good planning: without safeguarding what you have, the rest of the plan has nothing to stand on. I also support employers with their workplace pension arrangements. A well-run scheme improves outcomes for employees, reduces avoidable costs and strengthens financial wellbeing across a business. My aim is to make this area clear and manageable so that employers can offer meaningful value to their teams.

At the core of my work is a simple belief: people deserve to live comfortably, confidently and with direction. A clear financial plan gives people the reassurance of knowing what they are working towards, how to get there and how to protect the life they are building. With the right guidance, people often discover they can achieve more than they realised: retire earlier, protect their families properly and enjoy life with greater peace of mind. Whether someone is starting from the beginning, organising what they already have or checking that their plan still matches the life they want, my aim is always the same: to provide clarity, structure and confidence so they can live with certainty and purpose.
