How can you boost your pension pot?

In the UK, there are around 3.3 million pension pots that are considered as ‘lost’, containing an average of around £9,500 per pot*. Nobody wants to be missing out on money they have built up in a pension, but there’s good news - this kind of financial hit is completely avoidable.

Here are three simple ways to make sure your pension is working its hardest for you.

1. Check up on it

This one might seem obvious, but it’s easy to lose track of your pension pots, where they are, and what they’re doing. If you make a note of your pension providers, and check your pot(s) regularly, you’re far less likely to lose one of them over time.

2. Look at your investment allocation

Your investment allocation is where and how you’re investing your pension. Often, people will just use their pension provider’s default setting. But this might not actually be right for your retirement goals and risk profile. So, it’s a good idea to revisit this every few years.

3. Bump it up

If you’ve had a windfall recently, like a pay rise, bonus, or inheritance, putting a portion of it into your pension is a good idea. Not only is it tax-efficient, but you’ll be glad when your retirement comes around.

As an adviser, my role is to help you get all of this done simply, with all the facts and information you need. That might be helping you review your risk profile, consolidating old pension pots, or making a plan to help you retire early. Investing can help your money grow over time, but the value of investments can go down as well as up.

If that sounds good to you, please get in touch.

Richard kindly gave me well over an hour of his time for some initial advice in respect of my father's finances. The advice he gave was incredibly helpful and he also made what can be a daunting and complex topic, easy to understand.

I walked away from our appointment having learnt a great deal regarding my father's financial situation in the wake of my mother's passing last year and the best ways in which we might need to move forwards.

I would highly recommend Richard for anyone seeking advice around their finances.

Richard Gillies has been a fantastic financial advisor, giving me clear and appropriate advice on where, how and what to do with my income, giving me a brighter financial future, whether it was discussions about retirement, savings or financial goals he painted a clear picture of what I could do and I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Over a few sessions, Richard was able to explain to me (an absolute financial investment newbie) the best way forward for investment, taking into account my personal financial situation. No pressure - just friendly, supportive, professional help and advice. Would absolutely recommend!

I would like to express my thanks to Rich Gillies who has guided/is guiding me through the world of investing. I was a very nervous investor, as the thought of possibly losing money (that I wasn't used to having) scared me. But Rich, through patience & careful explanation put my mind at ease. He is a credit to the business and would happily recommend his services to others, in fact I already have.

Being new to investing I was very apprehensive in investing in stocks and shares. I have always feared that I might lose all, or part of my money. Richard was patient and explained investing to me in a language that I understood.

I was able to choose a risk level specific to my needs and once I was totally happy I invested in one of the Wealth Select funds.

I am very happy with the whole process and particularly Richard, who has been great.

Richard is located in Watford Village and offers expert financial advice to suit your needs.

I've spent over 20 years in public service and Chauffeuring, during that time I found I had a keen eye for financial planning and would often help friends, family and colleague with their finances.

I started to research the financial industry and came to quickly realise that the population is simply not educated to the correct standard at any point regarding financial matters, from a range of subjects including taxes, savings, pensions, investments or simply how the system works. I began my official career in finance by becoming a Mortgage and Protection advisor, then moving into Private Medical Insurance before becoming fully qualified with a Diploma in Financial Planning.

Whether it is helping people plan for their savings goals, plan for their retirement or just to obtain financial freedom, I thrive on that challenge and the help it provides.

My spare time is taken up with my wife and two children, I love travelling and if I could, I would spend my days travelling the world.
