Gifts that give back

Graphic of people exchanging gifts

December is often seen as the gifting season. But alongside the usual socks and chocolate gold coins, it might be worth planning a slightly bigger, longer-term present for your loved ones this year.

Inheritance tax (IHT) is notoriously complicated and can hit people with a big bill if it isn’t managed properly. It isn’t reserved for the very wealthy either. Dealing with IHT is a reality that many more families face after a loved one has passed - in what is usually an extremely vulnerable moment.

This is where using your gifting allowances can make a real impact on those around you. It’s a great way to share your wealth with the people you love while limiting their exposure to IHT. It does take a little bit of extra planning though.

Sitting down with an adviser like me can help you figure out where you want your money to go, and when. For instance, it might be more helpful to gift a family member a contribution towards their first home now, rather than leaving them a legacy.

Whatever you decide is best, we’ll find the most tax efficient way to do it.

I chose this job because nothing makes me happier than helping people achieve their goals. I worked in insurance for eight years, where I learned all about risk and why it's crucial to plan for the unexpected. I started this job talking directly to customers and later worked on analysing risks behind the scenes. This taught me to be careful, to explain things clearly, and to always do what is best for my client. This is the most important rule in my work.

I am qualified to advise on pensions, investments, and financial protection, and I always keep my knowledge fresh. My way of working is simple and based on three promises:

  1. Clarity: I will explain everything in simple terms, without confusing jargon.
  2. Teamwork: We will build your financial plan together, based on what you and your family want for the future.
  3. Trust: I aim to be your financial adviser for life, helping you through all of life's big changes.

In my own life, I've faced challenges that taught me the power of resilience, planning, and a positive attitude. I've learned that focusing on solutions is how you make dreams come true. This has made me a supportive person, and I aim to be someone you can always trust and feel comfortable talking to. Outside of work, I love kickboxing for its discipline and playing badminton with my family. These hobbies keep me balanced.

An interesting fact to end with is that I can complete a Rubiks Cube in under 2 minutes.
